There are some people who don’t just lead a community, they become part of its foundation.

For Congregation Bnai Brith Jacob, Rabbi Avigdor Slatus and Rebbetzin Rochel Slatus are exactly that.

After 45 years of service, they are preparing to retire, and for many in Savannah, it’s hard to imagine the synagogue without them.

More Than a Rabbi

Rabbi Slatus came to Savannah in 1981. For some communities, that might feel like history. For BBJ, it feels like yesterday, because his presence has been constant ever since.

He’s taught countless classes, delivered thousands of sermons, and guided generations through life’s biggest moments, from bar mitzvahs to weddings to times of loss.

But if you ask members what stands out most, it’s not just what he taught. It’s how he showed up.

Week after week. Year after year. Always steady. Always available.

The Quiet Strength Behind the Scenes

And then there’s Rebbetzin Rochel Slatus.

Anyone who has spent time at BBJ knows her impact isn’t loud, but it’s everywhere.

She’s the one who made people feel comfortable walking in for the first time. The one who checked in. The one who remembered.

In many ways, she helped shape the feeling of the synagogue, that sense that this isn’t just a place you attend, but a place you belong.

Together, Rabbi and Rebbetzin created something that can’t easily be described, but is deeply felt.

Watching a Community Grow

Over four and a half decades, they didn’t just serve the congregation; they grew with it.

They welcomed new families, watched children grow up, and then stood with those same children as they built families of their own.

That kind of continuity is rare.

And it changes a community. It creates roots.

A Different Kind of Leadership

Not every leader stays for 45 years. And not every community is shaped so deeply by the people at its helm.

What made Rabbi and Rebbetzin Slatus different wasn’t just their knowledge or dedication, it was consistency.

They were there.

For the big moments.
For the quiet ones.
For everything in between.

Saying Thank You

As BBJ prepares to honor them at the upcoming testimonial dinner, it’s not just about marking the years.

It’s about recognizing everything those years held.

The relationships.
The guidance.
The presence.

The kind of impact that doesn’t always make headlines, but lasts a lifetime.

What Comes Next

Retirement marks the end of a chapter, but not the end of their story.

Their influence is already woven into the fabric of the congregation. It will continue in the people they’ve guided, the values they’ve instilled, and the community they helped build.

And while their day-to-day roles may be changing, one thing is certain:

BBJ will always carry their imprint.
